[Nov 01, 2009] UN LUNCH SEMINAR WAS SUCCESSFUL...
The Brown Bag Lunch Seminar at UNDP to present demographic bonus and
middle-income avoidance by Prof. Kenichi Ohno and myself was successful
with various comments, questions, and new issues related to policy
formulation in Vietnam. Further policy advocacy meetings like this would
be promoted in coming time.

TRAP AVOIDANCE...
To further promote policy advocacy on the importance of demographic
changes on economic growth in Vietnam in coming decades, Prof. Kenichi
Ohno and I are invited to present our studies on demographic bonus and
middle-income trap avoidance at UNDP on 30 Oct. We hope that our studies
can contribute various policy implications for Vietnam's development.

[Oct 12, 2009] PRESENTATION ON DEMOGRAPHIC BONUS AND AGING IN VIETNAM...
On 16 Oct. 2009, at a workshop held by the Central Committe for
Popularization and Education (CCPE- Ban Tuyen giao Trung uong) and UNFPA
Hanoi, I will present issues on demographic bonus and aging in Vietnam
with opportunities, challenges and policy suggestions. These are
important policy issues for Vietnam in coming decades, as Vietnam will
be experiencing increasing working-age population and aging population
at the same time.
[Sep 20, 2009] INDIA CONFERENCE WAS SUCCESSFUL...
The GTZ-funded conference in New Delhi (see news on Sep. 09) was
successful. I presented issues on economic growth and social protection
development in Vietnam. Hundreds of people from many countries in Europe
and Asia participated in the conference. Our panel attracted a lot of
questions and comments on other Asian countries's experiences. You can

On 18 Sep.
2009, VDF will hold a workshop for Ms. Nguyen Thi Xuan Thuy (VDF

On 15
Sep. 2009, VDF will hold a workshop at NEU, namely Shindanshi: Japanese
SME Business Management Consultant System and Applicability to Vietnam.
This workshop will present various aspects of shindanshi, especially in

[Sep 09, 2009] CONFERENCE ON QUALITY OF GROWTH IN NEW DELHI, INDIA
During Sep. 14-16, 2009, I will be
participating in a conference in India, namely Quality of Growth:
Approaches to Inclusive Growth in Asian Societies. The trip will be
funded by GTZ (German Technical Cooperation). I will present the
situation of economic growth and social protection in Vietnam up to now.
There will be five persons for Vietnamese delegation.
[Sep 01, 2009] PAG WORKSHOP ON SOCIAL INSURANCE AND HEALTH INSURANCE
POLICIES
On Sep. 04, 2009, Policy
Advisory Group (PAG), a group setup by MoF and UNDP, will hold a
workshop to discuss about the current policies and challenges of social
insurance and social health insurance in Vietnam. I will be in charge to
presenting issues of social insurance in Vietnam. The research findings
of the workshop will be inputs for policy discussion on financial aspect
of social insurance and health insurance schemes in Vietnam.

[July 27, 2009] N.A OFFICE WORKSHOP ON POPULATION POLICIES...
On 30-31 July the National Assembly Office will hold a workshop on
population policies in Vietnam. I will be invited to present the
research on demographic bonus in Vietnam. This workshops aims to share
academic and practical findings on population issues in Vietnam, which
in turn provide various pieces of information for population strategy in
the coming decade.
[July 16, 2009] VDF MONTHLY WORKSHOP ON SOCIAL ISSUES...
On 15 July VDF invited Mr. Nguyen Viet Cuong, a lecturer of NEU and a
researcher of Indochina Research & Consulting (IRC) to share his
findings on the possible impacts of high inflation and economic downturn
on poverty reduction in Vietnam. Using the micro-simulation techniques
with the panel data from VHLSS 2002, 2004, and 2006, he pursued the

[Jun 29, 2009] MY LECTURING VISIT TO HITOTSUBASHI UNIV., WAS SUCCESSFUL...
During 20-28 June 2009 I was in Tokyo as a visiting fellow of the Fukino
Project of Hitotsubashi University - one of the well-known universities
in economic field in Japan. The main aim of the Project is to expand
international exchange in academic and policy education. I presented my
co-authored paper with Prof. Wade Pfau (GRIPS) on social pension in
Vietnam in the main campus, while a co-authored paper with Prof. Bui The
Cuong (SISS, HCMC) on demographic bonus in Vietnam at Asian Public
Policy Program (APPP). I received various good comments and feedbacks on
these studies.
[Jun 11, 2009] WORKSHOP ON SOCIAL SECURITY STRATEGY 2011-2020 WAS
SUCCESSFUL...
On 6-7 June 2009 in Hoa
Binh, we held a consultation workshop to get comments on the third draft
of the social security strategy 2011-2020. Participants were from
ministries, institutes, and international organizations. We got a lot of
useful comments as inputs for the revision. I am a member of the
drafting team, in charge of social insurance strategy.
[Jun 03, 2009] COMING VISITS TO HITOTSUBASHI UNIV. AND GRIPS...
Under the Fukino Project at
Hitotsubashi University, Japan, I am invited to be a visiting lecturer
for two weeks. I will make some presentations on my research about
Vietnam. This is the university where I completed Master's program in
public policy. Also, I will present a paper at GRIPS, where I completed
doctoral degree in public policy in 2008. Further information will be
updated.
[May 31, 2009] FOE'S MONTHLY WORKSHOP IS TEMPORARILY STOPPED...
Due to the final exams and coming summer holiday at the NEU, we will
stop our monthly workshop at the Faculty of Economics from May to

[May 05, 2009] VDF 2009's THIRD WORKSHOP ON SOCIAL ISSUES IN VIETNAM...
VDF will invite Mr. Phung Duc Tung (Indochina Research and Consulting -
IRC) to share his research on identifying poverty lines for Vietnam.

[Apr 24, 2009] INTERNAL SEMINAR ON SOCIAL SECURITY STRATEGY 2011-2020...
On 6 May 2009, an internal seminar will be held at the Institute of
Labour Science and Social Affairs (ILSSA) of the MoLISA, where the
drafting team for the Social Security Strategy 2011-2020 will present
the revised version of the first draft. This draft has been revised
using various comments and suggestions from experts and policy makers in
the first national conference held on 25 March.

[Apr 05, 2009] NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON PROPOSAL OF RETIREMENT AGE AND
GENDER EQUITY...
On 3 April 2009 In a series of study on social security strategy, the
Institute of Labour Science and Social Affairs (ILSSA) of the MoLISA
held another national conference on proposal of raising retirement age
of female workers and gender equity in the pension scheme in Vietnam.
This is an important topic for pension scheme reform in the coming
years, especially for the amendments of the Labour Code. I participated
in the conference as a discussant on the report completed by ILSSA and
the World Bank in Hanoi.

VDF will hold a seminar on
gender division of labor in the Vietnamese households on 3 April 2009.
This will be the third seminar in the 2009 Seminar Series on Social
Issues in Vietnam, and jointly held with the Institute of Population and
Social Studies (IPSS) of the NEU. We will welcome Professor John Knodel
(University of Michigan) and Assistant Professor

study, which was completed with other two Vietnamese researchers.
[Mar 26, 2009] THE FIRST NATIONAL
CONFERENCE ON SOCIAL SECURITY STRATEGY 2011-2020...
On 25 March 2009 in Hanoi,
the Institute of Labour Science and Social Affairs (ILSSA) of the MoLISA held
the first national conference on social security strategy 2011-2020. The main
aim of the conference was to disseminate the first draft of the strategy, and
listen to comments and suggestions from national and international experts and
policy makers of the field. I am a member of drafting team for this strategy.
About 50 participants actively discussed the strategy.

[Mar 01, 2009] A NEW PUBLICATION...
A joint paper between Prof. Nguyen
Khac Minh and myself has been published in the Asia-Pacific Development
Journal. This paper was about factor productivity and efficiency of the
Vietnamese economy in transition, in which we used different techniques
to estimate productivity and efficiency for the whole economy as well as

[Feb 25, 2009] FIRST MONTHLY WORKSHOP BY FACULTY OF ECONOMICS
On 20 February 2009, the Center for
Economic Analysis, Forecasting, Training and Sustainable Development of the
Faculty of Economics held the first monthly workshop. The purpose of this series
is to disseminate research findings among NEU and outside lecturers. The general
topic of the first seminar was about evaluating fiscal stimulus package of the
government. Dr. Pham The Anh (NEU) and Dr. Nguyen Duc Thanh (VNU) shared their
analyses on this common topic.
[Feb 19, 2009] NEU RECTOR AWARD FOR EXCELLENT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES IN

On 19 February 2009 I received an
award from the NEU Rector, which recognized my excellent research activities in
2008. This was one of three awards for NEU lecturers in 2008.

On 10-11 February 2009 I was at the
Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) in Singapore to present a
co-authored paper with Prof. Wade Pfau (GRIPS) on Vietnamese elderly work. This
