On Sep. 19, 2011, ILSSA will hold a seminar on National Transfer Account (NTA) approach in estimating contribution of age structure changes of population on economic growth. This is national seminar for Vietnamese team, where I am technical team leader.

[Sep 10, 2011] IRC DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR NO. 7
Together with IPSARD, IRC will hold a seminar on the impacts of price increases in 2008 on poverty and welfare of households in Viet Nam. Dr. Tung, IRC Chairman and research fellow, will present this research. More about seminars here.


[Aug 15, 2011] VIETNAM NATIONAL AGING SURVEY (VNAS)
Under the project 'Supporting and protecting rights for the vulnerable elderly' of the Vietnam Women Union, funded by Atlantic Philanthropies (AP), IRC and ISMS have jointly worked to prepare for the first-ever survey on the elderly at national level. I am the principal investigator of this project. Twelve provinces with about 4,000 persons aged 50 and over will be surveyed. Further information can be seen here.

[July 24, 2011] IRC DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR SERIES NO. 6
On 5 August 2011 from 9:00 to 11:00 at IRC, we will hold the Development Seminar Series No. 6, where Dr Nguyen Viet Cuong will present his research on the impacts of minimum wage increase on employment, income and expenditure in Viet Nam. Please contact IRC for further details (web).

[July 20, 2011] PECC CONFERENCE IN TOKYO WAS SUCCESSFUL
The conference on social resilience in Asia, held by the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC) in Tokyo on 12 July, was successful. A number of papers and discussions on the impacts of economic fluctuations on social issues were presented. More information can be seen here.

[July 2, 2011] PRESENTATION AT A PECC CONFERENCE IN TOKYO
I will attend a conference on social resilience in Asia, which will be held by the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC) in Tokyo on 12 July. I will provide information about unemployment insurance in Viet Nam and its challenges under economic slowdown and uncertainties.

[June 15, 2011] SEMINAR ON 'DISSEMINATION OF POPULATION CENSUS 2009 MONOGRAPHS' 
On 14 June 2011, I participated in the seminar jointly held by GSO and UNFPA to disseminate monographs on Population Census 2009. I made comments on the report on age-structure changes in Vietnam and their implications. Viet Nam has entered 'demographic dividend' and is moving to 'demographic aging', which require a lot of efforts in taking advantage of the former and preparing for the latter.

[May 28, 2011] INTERVIEW WITH 'BUSINESS' ON AGING
On 25 May I had an interview on aging issues in Viet Nam with Business - a newspaper of the Vietnam Alliance of Cooperatives. Challenges of the pension fund balance were in discussion. You can view the interview here (Vietnamese only).

[May 25, 2011] PRESENTATION AT CCPE SEMINARS ON POPULATION & DEVELOPMENT 
On 26 May in HCMC and 31 May in Hai Phong, I will present aging situation in Vietnam in the seminars held by the Central Party Committee on Popularization and Education (CCPE). These seminars aim to disseminate information about population issues and polices for development.

[May 23, 2011] INTERVIEW WITH VnExpress ON ELDERLY LIVING ARRANGEMENTS
On 23 May 2011, I had an interview with VnExpress - one of the most popular daily online news in Viet Nam - about changes in living arrangements of the elderly in Viet Nam. 'Skip-generation' families have become more popular, especially in rural areas, and such a phenomenom indicates a number of social protection policies for the old-age persons. News is here.


[May 20, 2011] INTERVIEW WITH VTV1 ON AGING AND POLICY LESSONS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES
On 18 May VTV1 program, namely 'Hoi nhap' (Integration), I shared some information about aging and the elderly in Vietnam as well as discussed how Vietnam could learn good lessons from other neiboring countries in preparing for a 'successful aging' country, in which good health, social participation and economic security are key factors.

[May 17, 2011] PRESENTATION AT VNCA
I was invited to present aging and the elderly in Vietnam with respective policy response proposals in a regular meeting of the Vietnam National Committee on Ageing (VNCA), chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung - Chairman of VNCA. There have been a lot of progresses in policies for the elderly in Vienam. However, to some specific cases, implementation and M&E of programs are concerned.

[May 13, 2011] MEDIA SESSION ON AGING WAS SUCCESSFUL
The media session on aging was held on 12 May 2011, which attracted about 50 journalists and interviewers from different journals, newspaers and television channels. A number of questions were raised, and most of them were about how the government of Vietnam would do to adapt with such an expected aging population. More will be published at UNFPA Vietnam website.

[May 04, 2011] MASS MEDIA SESSION WITH UNFPA ON AGING ISSUES
As planned, on 12 May 2011, I will join UNFPA Hanoi to have a mass media session on aging issues in Vietnam. This session aims to provide updated information about aging and the older persons in Vietnam as well as policy responses. Check UNFPA Vietnam website for further details.

[April 20, 2011] GLOBAL REPORT ON AGEING
HelpAge International (HAI) and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) have finished a report on global aging. The main aim of this comprehensive report is to overview 10 years of implementation of the Madrid International Action Plan on Ageing. I was invited to join the research team, and in charge of writing about Vietnam. The official report will be released soon.

[April 10] ERIA SEMINAR IN JAKARTA
I will present a paper on social pensions and elderly poverty in Vietnam using micro-simulation approach at the Economic Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) in Jakarta on 17 April. This is a research project funded and organized by ERIA for three Indochina countries.

[April 3] IPPM FORTH SEMINAR ON PUBLIC POLICY AND MANAGEMENT
On 6 April 2011, IPPM will invite Professor Andershir Sepahri from University of Manitoba, Canada to share his research findings on social health insurance and financial protection for the health providers in Vietnam. The seminar will be held at Lecture Room D301, NEU Campus from 18:30.

[March 13, 2010] SEMINAR ON SOCIAL PENSION AT DEPT. OF SOCIAL WELFARE AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE PHILIPPINES IN MANILA 
On 17 March 2011, I will share information on social pensions in Vietnam with participants from Department of Social Welfare and Development. This presentation is organized by HelpAge International. Other countries in the region such as Thailand will also share their experiences.

[Feb 26, 2011] REGIONAL WORKSHOP ON SOCIAL PENSIONS AT ADB WAS SUCCCESSFUL
On 24-25 Feb. at ADB Headquarters in Manila, the Philippines, ADB and HelpAge International (HAI) jointly held a regional workshops on social pensions in Asia. I presented the case of Vietnam, together with other researchers and policy makers from other Asian developing countries. A lot of experiences in design and implementation were shared. [Feb 25, 2011] VDF CONFERENCE WAS SUCCESSFUL
On 24 Feb at Melia Conference Hall in Hanoi, VDF held annual conference for 2011. This year, the main topic is to review quality of growth during 2001-2010, and directions toward 2020. Hundreds of participants from various organization attended and contributed to the conference. More news can be read on NEU website here.

[Feb 12, 2011] SEMINAR AT ADB H.Q ON SOCIAL PENSIONS IN ASIAN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
On 24-25 Feb, I will present a paper on social pensions in Vietnam at a joint seminar held be HelpAge International (HAI) and Asian Development Bank (ADB) at ADB Headquarter in Manila. Other papers on social pension impacts on elderly poverty in Bangladesh, Thailand and other Asian developing countries will be shared.

[Jan 09, 2011] PRESENTATIONS AT DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY INSTITUTE (DSI) OF MPI
On 11 Jan, 2011, I will make two presentations on demographic bonus and demographic aging in Vietnam at a joint seminar of UNFPA and DSI of MPI Vietnam. These two presentations will raise a number of socio-economic issues for development in Vietnam under such demographic changes.

[Jan 03, 2011] WORKSHOP ON POPULATION POLICIES IN VIETNAM
On 29 Dec 2010, the National Assembly Office's Department of Social Issues held a workshop to discuss about population policies and implications for the current and future development of Vietnam. I was invited to present the cases of demographic bonus and aging in Vietnam. Participants are the members of National Assembly in charge of social issues from southern provinces and cities.
